Stephen Coen hails Mayo’s spirit following win over Meath

Stephen Coen has hailed Mayo’s spirit following their win over Meath on Sunday.

The victory was Mayo’s first of the campaign and may well be a fatal blow to Meath’s hopes of maintaining their Division One status, particularly as they looked to be on the way to a surprise win when leading entering the last 10 minutes with the strong wind at their backs.

In the end, Kevin McLoughlin’s 1-2 salvo saw Mayo over the line in difficult circumstances.

Midfielder Coen said: “I suppose we could have got frustrated, especially in the second half because we created a lot of chances and just didn't take them. But overall I think we kept our composure. A big point that Mayo made there was graft, it's awful important in Division One.

“A lot of these games are won by attitude and work rate and I think we did that.

“Unhappy with the two goals we conceded, definitely won't want to look back at them on our video analysis because it will highlight a lot of our fall downs in the game.

“But no, overall we just worked in the game and thankfully got the win.”

Next up for Mayo is a trip to Clones to face Monaghan on Sunday week, with both teams level on three points in what is an extremely tight top flight with only a point separating the top seven teams.

“Monaghan are in good form, great outfit, strong team and we are definitely going to have to improve.

“We have two weeks to work on that and that is all we are going to focus on now,” Coen added.
