Stephen Cluxton in the reckoning for Dublin job, says county chairman Sean Shanley

Dublin GAA chairman Sean Shanley has suggested Stephen Cluxton could be an option to take over from Jim Gavin.

Gavin announced that he was stepping down from the role on Saturday morning after leading his county to a historic five consecutive All-Ireland titles.

Dessie Farrell is odds-on to try to fill the big shoes left by the 48-year-old.

Farrell has guided Dublin to All-Ireland titles at minor and U-21 level and was in charge of Na Fianna this year.

But Cluxton is also a possibility and Shanley said they will at least take his view on the next appointment into consideration - whether it's to appoint himself or not.

"Hopefully Stephen stays (playing) but we’d certainly have to talk to him," Shaley told the Irish Mirror.

"A captain that's after captaining Dublin to five-in-a-row, you'd have to talk to him and get his views but it's hard enough job being goalkeeper without being manager as well.

"Who knows?"

Meanwhile Shanley also teased a possible return for former boss and 2011 title-winner Pat Gilroy.

"If he’s interested we would certainly talk to him," he said.

Dublin coach and Gavin's former teammate Paul Clarke, who has in recent seasons taken charge of the senior team during the O'Byrne Cup, and both Declan Darcy and Jason Sherlock, who have also been on Gavin's coaching ticket, are also set to be in the running.
