Stephen Bradley claims League bosses must ensure best referees handle big games

Stephen Bradley claims that League bosses must ensure that the best referees handle the biggest games.

The Shamrock Rovers supremo couldn't believe that ref Paul McLaughlin red-carded Trevor Clarke and Lee Grace in the first half of the 1-0 loss to Bohemians on Tuesday.

Automatic one-game suspensions for both leaves the Hoops with just three fit senior defenders for Friday's big clash with Dundalk, as Sam Bone and Ethan Boyle are both injured.

First-choice goalkeeper Alan Mannus could also be doubtful after playing with an injured hand for over 50 minutes.

Clarke's dismissal for a last man foul was contentious as Roberto Lopes was closing in on Danny Grant.

Grace blocked a shot with his head 10 minutes later, but he was shown a second yellow card and Bohs awarded a penalty as McLaughlin thought the ball struck his arm.

Dinny Corcoran scored the rebound and it was enough for the Gypsies.

"I don’t think you can put everyone in the same bracket but we need to look at it, in the big, big games, whose refereeing them," said Bradley.

"The fourth official (Robert Hennessy) is one of the best in the League. Why is he not doing (refereeing) the game?

"In the big, big games we need to sit down and look at who does them, because the decisions are frightening. They’re ruining games.

Mick McCarthy insists his Ireland players are immune to FAI saga

"My problems is that they’re just so quick to give them (crucial decisions). It seems there’s one rule against us in Inchicore and on Tuesday night it’s totally different.

"It’s frightening. It's really hard to take.

"Speak to your officials, the fourth official, your linesman, and come to the correct decision.

"It’s shocking. It’s a big game and he couldn’t wait to get his card and the whistle out. I thought it was a terrible decision."

Along with losing Clarke and Grace, Rovers have a day less to recover than Dundalk for the Oriel Park clash with the title holders.

Brady believes the performance with nine men shows the spirit within his squad and that it will give the table-toppers extra belief heading to Dundalk.

"I thought they were unbelievable," he said. "If they produce that will, fight and desire between now and the end of the season, we’ll be right there.

"A lot went into it on Tuesday but they’re professional, they’ll recover. Big game, we go again Friday.

"They showed unbelievable character, togetherness. On another night, we could have nicked a draw out of it.

"But it’s not god enough, we keep coming in after big games and officials are after making unbelievable decisions. And it’s costing us, it’s not acceptable".
