Stephen A. Smith says he had shoulder surgery after a boxing injury

Stephen A. Smith was a caller on his own podcast, The Stephen A. Smith Show, on Friday, and the ESPN personality explained why he was absent and Dan Graca was filling in for him.

Apparently, Smith doesn’t just cover boxing sometimes. He also occasionally boxes himself, which led to him tearing his rotator cuff, an injury that required surgery.

As he explained while a guest on his own show:

“I’m hanging tough, man. Just to let my listeners know, I’m out. I had surgery on Wednesday. I tore my rotator cuff in my left shoulder boxing. … I was boxing, man. I like to fight a little bit from time to time, and I was working out and I was boxing a little bit, and I tore my rotator cuff in my left shoulder.”

Graca asked a key follow-up question regarding Smith’s injury, wondering if this fight was “by the books.” Smith continued:

“It was by the books. I’ve got a 250-pound trainer. His hand was hitting the wall from crying out loud. And I tore my rotator cuff, so I had surgery Wednesday, but I’ll be back in the house on Monday ready to go.”

There you have it. For fans who want to hear Stephen A.’s takes, he’ll be back next week.
