The twin brother of the man charged with the murder of schoolteacher Stephanie Scott has also been charged in connection with the crime.

A cleaner at the school Scott worked at, Vincent Stanford, was charged with her murder in April but police have now charged his 24-year-old twin with being an accessory after the fact after he was arrested in South Australia.

Scott, 26, was last seen on 5 April when she went into Leeton high school to finish some work before taking leave to get married the next Saturday. Photos of a burnt body were found on Stanford’s phone and Scott’s body was discovered in Cocoparra national park, north of Griffith, a few days later.

South Australia police arrested Stanford’s twin, Marcus, at a house in Forreston on Wednesday morning and a South Australian court cleared the way for the man to be extradited to Sydney from Adelaide.

Marcus appeared in handcuffs at Mount Barker magistrates court on Wednesday and, when asked if he knew anything about the warrant for his arrest, Stanford told the court he did not and indicated he had not spoken to a lawyer.

Asked if there was any reason why he should return to Leeton, he said: “Never been there, so I wouldn’t need to return.”

Marcus will spend the night in Adelaide and is scheduled to fly to NSW on Thursday morning where he will appear in the Sydney central local court.

Vincent Stanford was charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault on 8 April.
