Steph Curry is a fan of D’Angelo Russell’s ballhandling creativity, playmaking skill

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry seemed a bit punchy during his out-of-season media session during a break between teaching basketball to kids at this year’s Warriors Basketball Camp.

Asked by The Athletic‘s Anthony Slater how his recent workouts with new Warriors shooting guard D’Angelo Russell came to be, Curry said, “Just two teammates finding each other, and saying we should get some work in.”

But Curry seemed tickled when Slater asked which of the guards initiated the workouts.

“Siri,” Curry said. He then dissolved into laughter and needed to collect himself before hearing and answering the next reporter’s question.

“Sorry,” he said to Slater. “I don’t know why that made me laugh.”

When his giggle fit subsided, Curry answered Slater’s questions about how Russell can contribute to the Warriors in the 2019-20 season. The three-time NBA champion and former league MVP had glowing things to say about his new teammate, Russell, who most recently played with the Brooklyn Nets.

On what Russell brings to the Warriors while Klay Thompson is out with injury

He’s amazingly talented and skilled. He’s got creativity in terms of ballhandling, the way he sees the floor. And, obviously, he can shoot lights out. So, he’ll give us a different look, in terms of somebody that can have the ball in their hands and create offense. You know, we’re going to need that playmaking ability. We’ll be balanced and work off each other really well.

On what Russell brings to the Warriors after Thompson returns from injury

The [team will] take a different look. But I’m excited about the opportunities, man … There’s obviously unknowns that we’ll need to work out — rotations and things like that. But just in terms of what he can do with the basketball in his hands, I can’t wait to see the show.

On the possibility of Curry, Russell and Thompson in the starting lineup

Sure. I mean, you get creative in how you mix on matchups and try to create good offense during the entire game. I think, even defensively, there’s a lot of talk about that, and our [lack of] size, or what not. But the competitive fire will come out, and at the end of the day you find ways to get it done.

The biggest thing we learned from Curry’s comments, thought, is that mega-rich superstars get punchy too.
