It’s almost shocking to hear, but Stephen Curry — you know, just the two-time NBA MVP and greatest shooter of all-time — didn’t have access to a basketball hoop at his home until recently.
The home that he sold back in 2017 didn’t have a hoop and neither did his new $31 million house in Atherton, Calif.
Well, the coronavirus pandemic changed that.
As the NBA suspended its season amid the positive test from Jazz center Rudy Gobert, the league decided to close its facilities to players a week later. That meant that Curry would be stuck without a place to play basketball, so according to The Wall Street Journal, Curry had to buy a driveway hoop and assemble it himself.
It took five hours. Via The Wall Street Journal:
“I got overwhelmed looking at the manual,” Curry said.
After what he could only describe as “a pretty serious effort,” Curry finally succeeded at his unexpected assembly job. It only took him five hours.
“I was very confident in myself going in,” he said. “That was shot down pretty quick.”
The simple act of shooting a basketball in these very strange days turned out to be trickier than Curry anticipated. Even after he was done with the basket, there was something else to do: find a ball. “I sacrificed one of the indoor ones, and it lasted a day and a half,” Curry said. “It was worth it.”
The entire coronavirus pandemic is terrible, but the image of Steph Curry out on his driveway assembling a hoop just so he can practice basketball is pretty amazing to think about.
He’s also been working out with his 20-month-old son Jack.
Sounds like Steph will be ready whenever (or if) the NBA season does resume.
