Step back to Newcastle's Northumberland Street on New Year's Eve, 2004, in our video clip

We step back exactly 17 years in our short video clip showing Newcastle's Northumberland Street on New Year's Eve, 2004.

The footage was captured by Thomas Sivell who had kindly shared a number of films with ChronicleLive this year.

Back in 2004, folk were coming to the end of a year in which the Sage music centre had opened on Gateshead Quays; Tyneside's first multiplex cinema, Warner Bros at Manors, Newcastle, showed its last film after 15 years in business; and Sir Bobby Robson's Newcastle United team finished fifth in the Premier League and qualified for Europe. Imagine that!

In the wider world, it was a year which saw fox hunting banned in the UK; the Statue of Liberty in New York reopened after the 9/11 terror attacks three years earlier; and the Euro 2004 football championships took place in Portugal where England were knocked out of the tournament by France.

A still from Northumberland Street, Newcastle, New Year's Eve, 2004, by Thomas Sivell (Thomas Sivell)

Our short film clip from 17 years ago shows shoppers going about their business on busy Northumberland Street with New Year's Eve street entertainment provided by two men 'punting', ladies on stilts, and a mechanical horse.

The real interest though is the people. Maybe you'll spot someone you recognise in the clip.

That was 2004. All the best for 2022.
