Stena Impero: British tanker seized by Iranian forces 'to be released'

A British tanker seized by Iranian forces is to be released, two months after it was seized.

Stena Impero was held in July, with Iran saying it had violated its law.

But Hamid Baeidinejad, Iran's ambassador to the UK, said in a tweet on Monday evening: "The British flagged tanker Stena Impero, pursuant to the completion of the judicial and legal process, is now free to leave."

However, it is thought the release hasn't yet happened.

Iran's announcement comes after seven of the vessel's 23 crew members were released earlier this month.

The UK government had been demanding the immediate release of the ship and its remaining crews, with a spokesman saying: "Iran's illegal seizure of a ship inside an internationally recognised shipping lane is unacceptable and undermines international law."
