Stella McCartney has designed the first ever vegan Adidas Stan Smiths

After a long-standing relationship with adidas, cruelty-free designer Stella McCartney has created the first ever fully vegan Stan Smith.

McCartney, a lifelong vegetarian herself, originally started her long term collaboration with Adidas back in 2005, designing a line of high-tech, luxurious sportswear for the brand.

In 2012 she designed the London Olympics kit in partnership with the sportswear brand and more recently they collaborated on the Rio 2016 designs.

Now, the British womenswear designer has put her own twist on the iconic shoe, creating a completely vegan version, constructed entirely from vegan leather.

Stella McCartney bills her eponymous brand as “vegetarian,” meaning she does not use leather, skins, fur or feathers in any of her products. Her bags and accessories use a blend of organic and synthetic fibres with vegetable coatings, and are all at least 70 per cent handmade.

First launched as a tennis shoe for leading player Stan Smith back in 1963, the uber popular sneaker is now a prominent feature in any fashion-focused wardrobe, and is in fact the 6th most Instagrammed trainer style of all time

The Stella McCartney Stan Smith looks very similar to the originals, save for a few details: instead of being grass green, the heel is colour-blocked with navy and burgundy stripes and stamped with McCartney’s logo and the three adidas stripes down the side are replaced with lines of tiny stars, punched into the leather. Stan Smith’s profile remains sketched on the right tongue, however now the left one features Stella’s portrait.

Given the widespread popularity of vegan-leather Veja trainers, a brand that's now widely loved by the style set, we can see these high-end, zero cruelty sneaks being big winners.

The Stella Stan Smith is available in women’s and men’s sizes for £235 from the September the 10th and is available to pre-order from StellaMcCartney.com and in store now.
