A post on Stella McCartney's Instagram account has been deleted after she faced a backlash for plugging one of her coats which was worn by the Duchess of Sussex on Remembrance Sunday.

Meghan wore the £1,500 coat as she watched the sombre Cenotaph proceedings from a balcony in Whitehall.

The fashion designer later posted a picture on Instagram saying: "So honoured to have HRH Duchess of Sussex in our Autumn '19 coat at Remembrance Day service. x Stella #RemembranceDay."

The post received more than 44, 000 likes and many commented on how much they admired the outfit.

But others were quick to express how "inappropriate" they thought it was for the label to promote itself using Remembrance Sunday with a post on Instagram, which has now been deleted.

One person wrote: "Remembrance Day is to honour those who fought for us not to use for advertising purposes. Pretty shocked."

Another commented: "Today is about those who gave their lives for our freedom. Who gives a f*** what she's wearing," while another said: "Totally inappropriate."

One commenter also added: "Slightly inappropriate to advertise your clothes worn at the memorial service."

After saying that she is usually a fan of the designer, another Instagram user said: "I'm really surprised, shocked, saddened and disappointed that you uploaded this post.

"This is only my opinion, but I feel it was a completely inappropriate occasion to advertise."

Another wrote: "Using remembrance day to advertise your clothes is a little disrespectful!

"People died and you take pictures of people showing respect for advertising purposes. Just wrong."

The Duchess of Sussex often wears Stella McCartney's designs, even choosing the designer for her white halter-neck dress that she wore to her evening wedding celebrations.

The post has now been deleted from the Instagram account.

Stella McCartney declined to comment after being approached by the Standard.
