Steiner Academy Bristol's secondary school set to close in 2020

It's been a turbulent 12 months for Steiner Academy Bristol and now it's likely bosses will soon close classes for pupils aged 11 or older.

Earlier this year, the Fishponds state school was thrown into special measures following a damning Ofsted report.

Inspectors said pupils were being put at avoidable risk of harm and school leaders were issued with a "termination warning notice" forcing it to join a multi-academy trust or face being closed down.

Before the school shut for the summer holidays, bosses announced they were teaming up with Avanti Schools Trust.

The school currently offers education to children aged between four and 16 but a meeting took place in July where parents were briefed on plans to close classes for pupils aged 11 years plus.

Headteacher Joss Hayes said: "The Avanti team met with parents at the end of last term to discuss their plans and made it clear that, at that time, they thought moving to a primary model was the best way of securing the long-term future of the school and its pupils.

"Once the Avanti board has formally approved the re-brokerage of the three Steiner schools, we understand that Avanti will then submit a formal change proposal for consultation.

"This process lasts approximately six weeks and then the final version of the proposal has to be submitted to the RSC for formal approval."

Parents have told Bristol Live they were advised to look for alternative secondary provision during the July meeitng.

What is the Avanti Schools Trust?

The trust's 'about page' reads: "Ever since Avanti was conceived, our aspiration has been to develop both faith and non-denominational schools.

"Our current schools all have Hindu faith-designations and the next exciting phase for Avanti is to develop our group of non-denominational schools, underpinned by Avanti’s purpose to contribute to society through the systematic pursuit of human values and spiritual development."
