Stefano Pioli puts Celtic on notice as AC Milan boss reveals lofty Europa League target

Stefano Pioli insists AC Milan won't take their foot off the gas in the Europa League after their brilliant start to the Serie A season.

The Italian giants travel to Glasgow to take on Celtic in the opening game of the group stage with the Hoops licking their wounds following defeat to Rangers on Saturday.

In contrast, the San Siro giants sit top of Serie A with maximum points after four games after a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired derby win against Inter Milan.

Last season, Celtic beat Lazio home and away in the Europa League and the Rome club later claimed they had prioritised the league rather than their European campaign.

But Piolo insists there is no chance his Rossoneri side will do that.

He stressed: "We are AC Milan and it is only right that we face every match and competition with seriousness and ambition to win it.

"We are not in a position to choose one or the other.

"We need to use the squad in both competitions, but I will always try and pick my best team for a single match.

"Europe is AC Milan's garden.

"Yes, we are in the European competition that is the least important, but we are aiming to win the trophy. I think we are in a very balanced group. People said we got a lucky draw, I don't buy into that.

"So I will stress to my players the importance of getting off to a good start in Glasgow against Celtic."

And Pioli admits he's thrilled with the performances of 39-year-old superstar Ibrahimovic, who bounced out of his Covid sickbed to destroy Inter.

He said: "The most important thing is to see Zlatan happy. And he is very content and satisfied with life at the club right now.

"He's happy with his performances, his teammates and the whole club. It's too early to talk about his contract situation. Let's just enjoy him.

"Every great club has to have a champion in the team and Zlatan is ours."
