Stefan Sutherland's family deserve answers after years of tireless campaigning

The tireless campaigning of Stefan Sutherland’s family for a fresh investigation into his death is finally beginning to bear fruit.

Their determination to see a fresh light shone upon this deeply troubling case resulted in a special team of detectives being appointed to do just that.

And already, their work has illuminated areas of concern in the original probe – not least the discovery of several potential witnesses who were not previously interviewed.

Any one of these newly identified people might hold the key to solving what Stefan’s family and many in their Caithness community believe to be a terrible crime.

It is, of course, early days in the elite detectives’ review, but their findings so far do back up the concerns of the relatives that the local police were far too quick to determine the tragedy was a suicide.

This should encourage the current team of officers in their task of running the rule across every aspect of the case to uncover further evidence.

There already exists a great deal of material that points towards foul play. The hunt for more clues must continue so that if a murder can be proven, then justice may finally be served.

Labour pains

Scottish Labour’s latest catastrophe is further evidence of the mortal threat they face.

The party that delivered devolution has gone backwards in every Holyrood election and came fourth at last week’s General Election.

Many reasons exist for the party’s slide, but the independence referendum accelerated Labour’s decline.

As more of their former supporters switch to the SNP, senior party figures are calling for Labour to back IndyRef2.

They believe Labour loses from the polarised debate between the SNP and the Tories, and they want to change that.

The party’s problems are so deep that it would be reckless not to review its opposition to another referendum.

If Labour does not have answers to the issues of interest to voters, it will continue to lose elections and become even more irrelevant.
