Stefan Effenberg has been sacked as the manager of SC Paderborn after a run of 12 league matches without a victory.

The 47-year-old took charge in his first managerial role in October but after winning his first two games in charge he has failed to taste victory since. It also emerged this week that Effenberg did not have the required coaching licence to manage the club but the former midfielder said he would complete them “as soon as possible”.

Paderborn were relegated from the Bundesliga last season and are currently second bottom of Germany’s second tier with 19 points from their 24 matches.

Paderborn won promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history in 2014 under André Breitenreiter and in September last year found themselves top of the table. That form did not continue, however, and Breitenreiter left for Schalke following relegation before Markus Gellhaus endured a brief spell at the start of the current campaign.

Effenberg, a former Bayern Munich midfielder, who won 35 caps for Germany in the 90s, enjoyed a colourful playing career, falling out with his national coach Berti Vogts at the 1994 World Cup after appearing to give supporters the finger during the group game against South Korea.
