Steep drop in Bristol's coronavirus rate as cases reach grim milestone

Bristol's coronavirus rate has fallen once again today - and is now below South Gloucestershire's.

Our city's rate per 100,000 people stands at 128.8, which places us 185th out of a possible 360 areas. This compares to yesterday's 141.4.

South Gloucestershire has climbed to 180th, with a rate of 132.2.

Both areas are below the national average of 151, but still higher than the South West's 78.9 - which is the lowest region in the country.

According to the latest Government data, 60 people were diagnosed with the virus in Bristol today - meaning our city has now surpassed 16,000 cases since March.

South Gloucestershire confirmed 65 further infections on Wednesday.

Experts will be deciding next week if our city, and its neighbouring areas, should remain in Tier 3 restrictions.

Covid rates, cases and hospital admissions will all play a crucial role in helping ministers determine our new status.

The latest figures released on Sunday (December 6) show 92 more Covid patients were admitted to hospitals across the South West. This brings the total to 590 inpatients in the region.

UK-wide, 533 further deaths were confirmed over the past 24 hours, with 12,282 more people testing positive for the virus.

The UK's Covid-19 death toll has reached 73,125, where the virus was mentioned on the death certificate.

  • Bristol: +60 (16,016)
  • North Somerset: +27 (4,417)
  • South Gloucestershire: +65 (6,665)
