Steelers WR Diontae Johnson sidelined with hip injury

So far through a week of training camp, things have gone quite smoothly for the Pittsburgh Steelers in terms of injuries. Outside linebacker T.J. Watt has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list since the conditioning test but it is largely precautionary. But now we have an issue with rookie wide receiver Diontae Johnson and a hip injury that kept him out of practice on Saturday.

Johnson missed a good chunk of the offseason workouts in the spring with a hamstring injury but seems to have put that behind him. Head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t give the impression this latest injury was anything serious but when you deal with a guy who is all about speed and quickness, these little injuries can follow them around.

Johnson was the Steelers third-round pick in 2019. Johnson’s game is predicated on his ability to run ultra-clean routes and get the football in the open field. The competition for the starting spot next to JuJu Smith-Schuster is wide open and Johnson seemed to be in the lead before this slight setback.
