Steelers WR coach hints Diontae Johnson was in demand by the Bucs

The Pittsburgh Steelers clearly see something in former Toledo wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Pittsburgh drafted Johnson on Friday night with their first third-round pick (No. 66 overall) in part because they didn’t want another team to snatch him up.

Steelers’ wide receiver Darryl Drake spoke to the media after the pick and offered some insight about how badly at least one other team wanted him. According to Drake, he got cussed out by a Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach for selecting Johnson and said he was going to be their next pick.

In watching Johnson play, you can see why the Steelers like him. After trading Antonio Brown to the Oakland Raiders, they wanted to find a guy who brings similar types of skills. Johnson is something of a work in progress as a route runner and needs to improve concentration but his quickness and speed after the catch are evident.
