Steelers work out former Michigan TE Joel Honigford

With starting tight end Pat Freiermuth out for multiple weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers have already begun a search for a short-term replacement. According to the league report, the Steelers had former Michigan tight end Joel Honigford in for a workout.

Honigford was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent but didn’t survive final cuts. Honigford spent six seasons at the University of Michigan and started his college career as an offensive lineman.

With Freiermuth out, Pittsburgh will lean heavily on Connor Heyward and rookie Darnell Washington to fill in. If there is any good news from this, it’s the fact that because the Steelers have so grossly underutilized the tight end position so far this season, there won’t be any significant changes to the gameplan while Freiermuth is out.
