The Pittsburgh Steelers continued to tweak their 90-man roster before the team’s first preseason game. The team announced on Thursday they waived cornerback Herb Waters and in his place signed cornerback Derrek Thomas.
Thomas certainly looks the part of an NFL cornerback at 6-foot-3 but he’s lanky at 189 pounds. His coverage skills are raw but he shows good effort. He’s a longshot to make the final 53-man roster but should provide an adequate camp body. Waters was released in part because he was injured and at this point in camp NFL teams need able bodies.
Pittsburgh will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their first preseason game of the season on August 9.
