Steelers vs Bucs: Joshua Dobbs named starting QB for preseason game

If you were wondering if the Pittsburgh Steelers might play quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, your wait is over. Roethlisberger will not play and it will be third-year pro Joshua Dobbs getting the start. According to head coach Mike Tomlin, Mason Rudolph will also play a significant portion of the game.

Dobbs and Rudolph are currently in a training camp battle for the backup spot behind Roethlisberger. Both guys must recognize Big Ben can’t play forever and with this young talent base, want to cement that No. 2 spot for the foreseeable future.

There was a thought Roethlisberger might play more this preseason considering the Steelers face the New England Patriots in Week One. Traditionally Tomlin only plays his stars in the third game so we will see if he sticks to the formula with such a significant opening weekend matchup.
