The Steelers made their fourth trade in the past six days on Sunday, acquiring former Tampa Bay safety J.J. Wilcox and a 2019 seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick in next year's draft.
Wilcox was a third-round pick of the Cowboys in 2013 and spent his first four NFL seasons with them. He signed a two-year contract with the Buccaneers in March.
The Steelers must make a corresponding roster move to get back to the league-mandated 53-man roster limit.
The Steelers have some injury concerns at safety. Starting free safety Mike Mitchell has not practiced in a month after he was injured in the first padded practice of training camp. He told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week that he would be ready for the opener in Cleveland next Sunday.
Reserve safety Jordan Dangerfield injured an ankle in the final preseason game at Carolina. The Steelers have not provided an update on the severity of his injury.
That left the Steelers with two healthy safeties for the first week of the regular season _ starting strong safety Sean Davis and reserve Robert Golden. Cornerback Will Gay also has taken some snaps at safety in recent weeks.
In March, Wilcox signed a two-year deal worth $6.25 million with $3.12 million guaranteed. It's not known at this time how much of the salary the Steelers took on.
