Steelers’ third-round compensatory pick in 2020 NFL draft is in jeopardy

The one good thing we all hopes will come of running back Le’Veon Bell leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers via free agency is being able to recoup a third-round compensatory draft pick. The formula for the compensatory picks is complicated and based on all the moves a team makes, but things seemed set for the Steelers to land a third-rounder.

But now this could be in jeopardy because of linebacker L.J. Fort. The Eagles released Fort today, which removes him from the formula in determining the Steelers’ comp picks. It benefited the Steelers that Fort signed elsewhere, but now he’s out of work.

However, according to Nick Korte of Over The Cap, there is a way the Steelers can get the third-round pick back. But it involves cutting wide receiver Donte Moncrief.

Moncrief was a healthy scratch last week after struggling in the first two games. There’s no rush for the Steelers to make a move with Moncrief, but if the team doesn’t think he can turn it around and start hanging on to the football, it would behoove them to get that pick back.
