Steelers sign TE Zach Gentry to a 4-year contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to press on and get their 2019 NFL draft class signed. The Steelers signed two more players on Thursday. The team announced via their Twitter account they had signed their fifth-round pick, former Michigan tight end Zach Gentry to a four-year contract.

The pick of Gentry came via a pick acquired in the trade of wide receiver Antonio Brown. After letting Jesse James leave via free agency, tight end became a need. Pittsburgh saw something in Gentry to warrant using a fifth-round pick on him.

In going back over several Michigan games, Gentry’s highlights are confusing. He has ridiculous size but was grossly underutilized. He only had 32 receptions in 2018.  It’s unclear how the Steelers will utilize Gentry. I’m not sure he has the strength to line up in line as a run blocker and his route running is somewhat passive as well. Hopefully with Vance McDonald running the show, Gentry will have plenty of time to get stronger.
