Steelers sign CB Jermaine Ponder, waive CB Derrek Thomas

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made another pair of roster moves. The team announced they had waived cornerback Derrek Thomas and in his place signed cornerback Jermaine Ponder. Thomas had only been with the team for five days.

Ponder is a PA kid having played at FCS school St. Francis so Steelers’ fans should be familiar with him to a degree. Ponder was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cleveland Browns. Ponder has excellent size and flashes elite athleticism but his film isn’t great and he struggled with his effort in college. At this point the Steelers want bodies for camp and healthy players are at a premium.
