Steelers shuffling roster spots ahead of Sunday’s game

Pittsburgh Steelers writer Chris Adamski is reporting that offensive lineman Fred Johnson and linebacker Jay Elliott are being waived. It is widely believed they are being removed from the 53-man roster to make room for quarterback Paxton Lynch and running back Trey Edmunds.

These moves became a necessity due to the rash of injuries on the Steelers roster. Despite the fact quarterback Mason Rudolph has been working out, the promotion of Lynch says he will not be out of the concussion protocol and won’t be available this week. Lynch will back up Devlin Hodges.

Edmunds is getting the call because of Jaylen Samuels’ knee injury. Edmunds will serve as a backup to James Conner and Benny Snell. Samuels could miss as much as a month.

Adamski also noted Johnson and Elliott could both be brought back to the practice squad if they clear waivers.
