Steelers select CB Justin Layne in the 3rd round of the NFL draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers went back to the defensive side of the football for their second pick of the third round. Pittsburgh chose long, rangy cornerback Justin Layne from Michigan State.

Layne is a converted wide receiver with elite NFL size. Most pundits speculated the Steelers would use their first-round pick on a cornerback but getting Layne late int he third round gives the Steelers an excellent developmental player to coach up in Artie Burns’ final season with the team.

The Steelers don’t have a great track record in drafting cornerbacks but this feels like an excellent value selection. We will dig in more on how Layne fits on the Steelers roster and what his role could look like in 2019 but for now this is a great rebound pick on the second day of the draft.
