Steelers seem to still be in the market for an upgrade at tight end

If you aren’t overly impressed with the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end, don’t feel you are alone. This group doesn’t inspire much confidence in many, including the Steelers staff. According to NFL reporter Field Yates, the Steelers were one of the teams to put in a waiver claim on tight end Ricky Seals-Jones. The Cleveland Browns also put in a claim and were rewarded Seals-Jones.

This is no criticism of Vance McDonald. Despite his struggles to stay healthy, McDonald is one of the more productive tight ends in the AFC. He caught 50 passes last season behind two receivers with more than 100 each. But the reality is the rest of the depth chart leaves plenty to be desired. The Steelers kept Xavier Grimble and Zach Gentry on the 53-man roster but neither player really fits the mold of what Pittsburgh asks of their tight ends.

Unfortunately, time is running out for the Steelers to land a veteran. Cuts are done so unless a team with a gullet of tight end depth release a player to make room for another position, this is the unit they are going with this season.
