Steelers rookie Chase Claypool embraces virtual offseason

In a typical NFL offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers would be holding their rookie minicamp and working closely with their newest dance class. But this is a whole new world and this means the Steelers coaches don’t get to work directly with the rookie class and instead are making do with the technology available.

One of these rookies who is making the best of an unusual situation is wide receiver Chase Claypool. Claypool has been meeting with staff via video calls and is doing his best to absorb the playbook while he trains on his own in Canada.

“I want to get a good grasp on the playbook,” Claypool said. “You can’t get the whole playbook in a few days. Just a good grasp on the concepts, the terminology. That is what I learned today, those basic things.”

Claypool was the team’s second-round pick out of Notre Dame. A focus of the Steelers offseason has been to add athleticism on offense to try and get some balance between the offense and the defense. Claypool gives the Steelers a type of weapon they haven’t seen since Martavis Bryant was in his prime.
