Steelers release TE Xavier Grimble from IR with injury settlement

According to the NFL transactions page, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released tight end Xavier Grimble from the reserve/injured list with an injury settlement.

Grimble entered the preseason as the team’s No. 2 tight end and was largely unopposed for reps. Vance McDonald is the starter but if Pittsburgh chose to utilize two tight ends heavily, Grimble could have had a big season.

But an injury did Grimble in. Once injuries to Grimble and McDonald hit the Steelers had to scramble, making a trade for Nick Vannett. Pittsburgh gave Gimble three full seasons to prove he was more than just an athlete and he could never do it.

Injury settlements are typically based on how much a player would make upon their return from IR as estimated by the team. For example, if Grimble is estimated to be ready to return by Week 13, the settlement would be something close to four game checks.
