The Pittsburgh Steelers had agreed to all wear stickers on the backs of their helmets this season. The team had agreed to wear the name Antwon Rose Jr. for the full season. But it only took one game for this to change.
Offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva changes his helmet up and instead of Rose, he put the name Alwyn Cashe. According to Steelers reporter Chris Adamski, here is why Villanueva chose Cashe.
Alwyn Cashe died 10/17/05, when an improvised explosive devise detonated near his vehicle in Samarra, Iraq. He suffered 2nd/3rd-degree burns 70%+ of his body when he ran back into the vehicle in attempt to rescue soldiers trapped inside.
There will be plenty of fans who want to vilify Villanueva for this. But having read the story of Cashe, it’s hard to argue with him being a great person to pay tribute to. The rub comes with Villanueva going against what the team agreed to.
