Steelers OL B.J. Finney could be the Saints’ replacement for Max Unger

The New Orleans Saints got shocking news on Saturday when Pro Bowl center Max Unger decided to retire rather abruptly. This leaves a team with a shrinking window to win a Super Bowl in a lurch when it comes to their offensive line. This is where the Pittsburgh Steelers come in.

Pittsburgh has a very good center on the roster right now who isn’t going to see much playing time this season in B.J. Finney. With Ramon Foster re-signed and a new contract for Maurkice Pouncey, the interior offensive line is in good shape.

Finney was signed to a second-round RFA tender so if the Saints did want to sign him, they would have to surrender a second-round pick in the process. But with minimal depth behind Unger, this might not be a bad move for either side.

In three seasons, Finney has nine starts and had proven to be a mauling, physical interior lineman. He’s also shown great improvement as a pass protector. Over the last two seasons, Finney has played 234 passing snaps and only allowed five pressures. He would be missed by the Steelers but there isn’t the urgency to have Finney on the roster as there is for New Orleans to get a starting center.
