So far this offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made multiple moves, almost all designed to bolster depth in the trenches on both sides of the football. Multiple needs have been filled including defensive line, offensive line and tight end. How does an active offseason impact the Steelers draft plans?
Well first and foremost, fans need to expect the unexpected. Pittsburgh hasn’t shied away from drafting for need in recent years but this year we could see a big return of drafting simply the highest-rated player on the board. This means any position is on the table, even ones you might not consider a priority.
Where do I think the Steelers will go with their pick in the second round? I’m looking offense. Running back, wide receiver, offensive tackle or quarterback. Pittsburgh’s defense was dominant last season and the only starters lost are defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and inside linebacker Mark Barron.
With so much uncertainty about the future at those four offensive positions in 2021, it wouldn’t shock me if the team’s first two picks addressed two of these positions, especially offensive tackle and wide receiver.
Drafts like this are always a little more interesting but the whole change in structure to draft prep and the event itself really lends itself to a more conservative approach and drafting safer instead of reaching for a player the Steelers might not know as well as they would have in years past.
