Steelers officially announce release of Morgan Burnett

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Monday they have released veteran safety Morgan Burnett. Burnett only spent the 2018 season with Pittsburgh. Injuries limited his opportunities and he finished with only two starts and 30 tackles.

When Burnett was signed, he was supposed to be the guy to replace Mike Mitchell. Then Pittsburgh drafted Terrell Edmunds in the first round and things got complicated.

Burnett then found himself miscast as a dime linebacker where he didn’t fit and he recognized it. It was rumored early in the offseason Burnett would want his release and the Steelers have given it to him.

The release of Burnett will save the Steelers $3.63 million this season but also put $2.83 million on the books in dead money. This move should give second-year safety Marcus Allen an opportunity to earn significantly more playing time in 2019.
