Steelers name QB Mason Rudolph starter vs Chiefs

Last week, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Joshua Dobbs was the starting quarterback. He was then followed by second-year player Mason Rudolph. This week, against the Kansas City Chiefs it will be Rudolph getting a crack at the Chiefs’ top defenders and Dobbs will follow him.

This is according to head coach Mik Tomlin at his Thursday press conference per Missi Matthews of the team’s official site.

Tomlin also said at his press conference Devlin Hodges would get snaps. In the big picture, Dobbs and Rudolph are battling for the No. 2 quarterback spot and Hodges is hoping he can play well enough to perhaps bump one of them for the No. 3 spot.

But looking longterm, I’m not sure the strategy of keeping Ben Roethlisberger off the field in preseason as he’s done in the past is the prudent move. The Steelers don’t get any games to shake off the rust this season when the regular season kicks off and if Tomlin sticks to the plan, Big Ben is only going to get a handful of series in the third game. Pittsburgh players the New England Patriots in Week One.
