Steelers mortgage the future with restructure of Ben Roethlisberger’s contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate to free up salary cap space. They have made multiple moves including a handful of contract restructures to get themselves under the cap.

Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac is reporting the Steelers have restructured the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger is coming back after missing 14 games in 2019 with an elbow injury. Without Roethlisberger the team finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

There are no official details about how much the restructuring will save the Steelers but estimates are it will be close to $10 million for this season. But a deal like this will also push salary into next season. This could make Roethlisberger’s 2021 cap his something in the $40 million range.

Did the Steelers make the right move? A full re-work of Roethlisberger’s deal that wouldn’t cost a fortune in future money would have likely added more years to the deal the Steelers don’t want to be on the hook for with an aging quarterback.
