Steelers land defensive star in new mock draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have some tough decisions to make when they go on the clock with the 20th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Defense has to be the top priority but if Pittsburgh trades wide receiver Antonio Brown away, wide receiver would challenge for the top spot.

The folks over at Touchdown Wire have put out a new one-round mock draft and they hit the mark for the Steelers in the first round by staying the course and continued to work on building a defense to match the offense.

Touchdown Wire gave the Steelers former Alabama safety Deionte Thompson. Here’s what they have to say about the pick:

In 2018, the Steelers’ safety dance was more like a scrum. Neither Morgan Burnett nor Sean Davis was consistent, and the team is still trying to figure out how best to utilize second-year man Terrell Edmunds. Every NFL team needs a true boundary-to-boundary safety who can play the deep third well, and Thompson has proved the ability to do that play after play.

You won’t see a lot of mock drafts going safety early to Pittsburgh but this is a smart pick. Even if Sean Davis steps up and Pittsburgh figures out how to use Terrell Edmunds, a third safety who can cover a ton of field makes sense. The Steelers use a ton of three safeties in their dime defense and Thompson would give Pittsburgh a reliable centerfielder in coverage.
