Steelers head into February with a paltry $1.43 million in salary cap space

It isn’t a question of if the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have to jettison salary this offseason, just of how far they are willing to cut. According to Over The Cap the Steelers have only $1.43 million in cap space with a month to the start of free agency.

We’ve already offered up four players we think Pittsburgh will release to free up cap space. Tight end Vance McDonald, linebacker Mark Barron, guard Ramon Foster and linebacker Anthony Chickillo could all be released and free up just over $19 million in space.

Pittsburgh also could restructure the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to save a few more million. But the moves are all to what end?

Most would say first and foremost it would be to find a way to keep EDGE Bud Dupree under contract. His huge 2019 season drove up his asking price in a big way. Is it worth releasing three starters and a key reserve to hopefully keep one player?

Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is another free agent Pittsburgh might have to let leave rather than get into a bidding war. This would be unfortunate for one of the more underrated guys on defense.
