Steelers HC Mike Tomlin stands alone as only Black head coach in the NFL

Head coach turnover is an inevitability in the NFL and anyone who follows the spot understands when a team underperforms, the head coach takes the brunt of the blame. But this list is unique this season as it pertains to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This season, the seven NFL head coaches listed below lost their jobs.

David Culley, Texans
Joe Judge, Giants
Brian Flores, Dolphins
Matt Nagy, Bears
Mike Zimmer, Vikings
Vic Fangio, Broncos
Urban Meyer, Jaguars

With the firings of former Houston Texans head coach David Culley and former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin stands as the only Black head coach in the NFL.

The Rooney Rule, which sets the guidelines for ethnic-minority hiring practices in the NFL was named after former Steelers owner Dan Rooney who was chairman of the NFL diversity committee when it was first implemented in 2003. The Steelers hired Tomlin before the 2007 season.
