Steelers HC Mike Tomlin’s analysis of the red zone problems: ‘Us sucking’

The Pittsburgh Steelers were fortunate to get out of Wednesday’s game with a win. Pittsburgh beat the Baltimore Ravens 19-14 in spite of a miserable effort by the Steelers in all three phases.

One area that really stood out was how poorly the Steelers played in the red zone. Drops were especially problematic for the Steelers’ receivers and tight ends which forced the Steelers to trade touchdowns for field goals and keep the Ravens in the game.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was visibly upset after the game and he held nothing back when talking about his concerns. When asked specifically about what he attributed the red-zone struggles to, he simply said, “us sucking.”

Harsh but true. You don’t expect to see guys like Diontae Johnson and Eric Ebron drop so many catchable passes. A win is great but Tomlin understands this is not the type of thing they can sustain if their goal is to continue to win football games. The Steelers got very lucky tonight to play against a struggling, shorthanded Ravens team.
