Steelers HC Mike Tomlin gave permission for Alejandro Villanueva to switch names on helmet

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle caused a bit of a stir on Monday night when he chose to cover up the name of Antwon Rose Jr. on the back of his helmet and instead wrote the name Alwyn Cashe. But before everyone gets all bent out of shape about it, he had the blessing of the coach.

Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed this when he spoke to the media on Tuesday and he said he spoke to Villanueva before he made this move and it was cleared in advance.

However, this does raise an interesting point. Tomlin has contended that whatever the team does they will do together and then follows it up with this statement about players expressing themselves however they wish. This is a contradiction in itself.

While I don’t disagree that Cashe is a better option for the helmet, it does run counter to what the team seems to have agreed to. What do you all think? Let me know in the comments.
