Steelers HC Mike Tomlin doesn’t rule out Joshua Dobbs packages in playoffs

On Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers showed a new wrinkle in their offense against the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator worked backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs into the offense and you just loved to see it.

The Steelers used Dobbs as part of a specialized package designed to maximize Dobbs’ athleticism as a runner in the zone read. And it worked. Dobbs had two rushes for 20 yards and it worked like a charm.

When Tomlin spoke to the media on Sunday he made it clear he isn’t opposed to keeping Dobbs on the active roster this week to use some of those concepts again in the rematch against the Browns.

Is this just gamesmanship? Those two carries will now force the Browns to take practice time this week to prepare for Dobbs in the offense. Saying the team plans to put Dobbs on the active roster adds to the level of preparedness Cleveland will need just in case.

But all this could just be posturing and the Steelers have no plans to actually use Dobbs this week. But either way, it serves the same purpose. Personally, I’d love to see the Steelers diversify their run game like this.
