Steelers HC Mike Tomlin: ‘[Ben’s] spiral could be a little tighter’

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin got to see his quarterback throw live and in the flesh for the first time this week since September 2019.

Tomlin will never admit it, but he found it hard to sleep the night before Ben Roethlisberger was scheduled to throw. After all, his mechanics are nearly as important as his health to the 2020 season.

“I am extremely comfortable with where he is in the process,” said Tomlin during a Thursday press conference. “I watched him throw. I didn’t see anything that was alarming, his velocity is excellent, his spiral could be tighter, I’ve seen it tighter but nothing to alarm you.”

Tomlin used “alarm” twice in one sentence, so it was obvious he wanted to stress that there’s no concern about his spiral. But it does go against what Ben’s receivers have been saying. “He’s cut a lot of them loose actually,” observed Diontae Johnson. “Yesterday, he had a nice, tight spiral like you want it. He’s going to put the ball wherever he wants it.”
