Steelers have $16.3 million in salary cap space after 2019 number set

The number for the 2019 NFL salary cap came out this week and as expected the number has jumped by around $11 million. This year’s number will be set at $188.2 million per NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

What does this mean for the Pittsburgh Steelers? Based on the information at Over The Cap, it means Pittsburgh will go into free agency with around $16.3 million to spend. This is a tiny number in the big picture of the NFL. Teams like the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets both have over $95 million to spend.

Based on the current figures, only seven teams have less money to spend. Fortunately for the Steelers, their options in terms of in-house free agency are fairly tame and there aren’t many big decisions to make. You figure in the pending contract extension for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and you have to assume the Steelers will be able to free up a few million more to try to improve the team this offseason.
