Steelers free up $3.85 million in cap space: Is a Heyward extension coming soon?

It’s cutdown day for the Pittsburgh Steelers but this isn’t the only business the Steelers are taking care of today. According to NFL reporter Field Yates, the Steelers have freed up $3.85 million in 2020 cap space by converting over the base salary of guard David DeCastro into a signing bonus.

Why are the Steelers moving money around this late? There are a couple of options. The simplest one is Pittsburgh is going to need to be prepared to add some talent once the other NFL teams have made their cuts. The team has admitted they are open to adding more depth at linebacker and safety so there could be some players they already have their eye on.

The more hopefully option is this is a move to help get defensive tackle Cam Heyward an extension. Heyward and the Steelers have been trying to work out a longtime extension but so far there has been very little progress. No one wants Heyward to go into the season without a new deal and let him hit free agency.
