Pittsburgh Steelers fans love to point out how well they travel. They’re one of a handful of NFL teams with a fanbase that extends beyond their region — the Cowboys and Packers are up there too — and that fact was on display for Pittsburgh’s road game against the Arizona Cardinals.
We’ve already seen Steelers fans completely take over the Los Angeles Chargers’ home stadium at Dignity Health Sports Park, but that venue fits just 27,000 fans … and — let’s be honest — every visiting fanbase takes over Dignity Health Sports Park.
The Cardinals, on the other hand, play at the 64,000-seat State Farm Stadium. And though the Cardinals often struggle with keeping out visiting fans, they’ve typically managed to at least hold a majority of the home-team support since the move away from Sun Devil Stadium. Well, the stadium looked like this on Sunday:
Just, uh, wow. They might as well have played the game at Heinz Field.
This photo was taken from Sunday’s game in Arizona. The only person rooting for the Cardinals to be seen was some dude in a Ravens jersey with a Cardinals scarf.
The Steelers players took notice too. Vince Williams tweeted after the game that it was a home game.
Steve Nelson also voiced his appreciation for the turnout.
So, when Steelers fans claim to be part of the NFL’s best traveling fanbase, you should probably believe ’em. The scene in Arizona was no joke.
