Steelers DT Cam Heyward understands the loss is bigger than the fight

Since Thursday night’s game, the headlines have been all about the fight at the end of the game and the ensuing discipline from it. But what got lost in all the hoopla was an embarrassing loss by the Steelers to the Cleveland Browns 21-7.

But defensive tackle Cam Heyward didn’t forget and he talked about it to the media on Monday.

“The most important thing is that we lost that game,” Heyward said on Monday. “I know that got overshadowed by a lot of things, but as a defense, we didn’t play well. We were on the field too much, and that’s our fault.”

“They drove the ball & had a lot of success. You’ve got to learn from that. I’m not going to hide from that. I know we didn’t play how we’ve been playing. But that just means you’ve got another week to step it up. The great thing about it is, we play them twice.”

It was a total shock to see a defense that had played so well for the previous four games play so poorly. No turnovers and only one sack were completely out of character for Pittsburgh.

This offense cannot produce enough points on its own to sustain if the defense isn’t playing its best. There are simply too many injuries on the offensive side of the football to consistently score points. Heyward is the leader on the Steelers’ defense and if there is anyone who can rally the defense this week against the Bengals it is him.
