Steelers draft pick Broderick Jones honors late Georgia teammate by choosing No. 77

Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Broderick Jones rocked No. 59 at the University of Georgia. The offensive tackle has opted for a different number in Pittsburgh, one that carried special significance for Jones and the Georgia Bulldog family.

Jones, the No. 14 overall pick after a trade up by Pittsburgh, has chosen to wear No. 77 for the Steelers. He chose 77 to honor the late Devin Willock, a teammate at Georgia who was one of two people killed in a tragic traffic accident after the team won the national championship. The crash involved Eagles first-round pick Jalen Carter in a street-racing incident.

“It’s in honor of my teammate that passed,” Jones said via Teresa Varley of Steelers.com. “He wore No. 77. No. 59 is not available. No. 77 was another option. I felt like I would do that for him, his family and me.”

No. 59 in Pittsburgh represents Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham. Kudos to Jones for doing something special to honor the victim of a terrible tragedy.
