According to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, the Pittsburgh Steelers are declining the fifth-year option on safety Terrell Edmunds. This news comes less than a week after the Steelers decided to pick up the fifth-year option on the team’s other safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Edmunds was the Steelers first-round pick in 2018. Meanwhile the Steelers traded for Fitzpatrick after being the first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in the same year.
This move should come as no surprise. There was no way the Steelers were going to be on the hook to Edmunds for that much money, especially with Fitzpatrick the priority.
Through three seasons, Edmunds has proven to be a decent strong safety but certainly not the impact player Pittsburgh thought they drafted. Edmunds has 251 career tackles, two sacks and three interceptions.
By declining Edmunds fifth-year option, he will be a free agent at the end of the 2021 season.
