Steelers DC Keith Butler says Taco Charlton will play OLB

Early this week, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed former first-round pick Taco Charlton to its practice squad. At 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, Charlton is bigger than the Steelers typically use at outside linebacker but 30 pounds lighter than what they want from a defensive end. This made his role with the team somewhat up in the air.

When defensive coordinator Keith Butler addressed the media on Thursday, he clarified that Charlton will play outside linebacker for the Steelers but wasn’t sure if he would be ready to play this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals.

In four seasons, Charlton has played in 44 games between the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins. He has 12 career starts and 11 career sacks.

Pittsburgh is currently waiting to see if outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith will be available for this week’s game. Both players are currently dealing with groin injuries.
